Why you should use video in your WooCommerce store

Below are four key reasons why adding video to your WooCommerce product pages will boost your sales. We know that creating good quality video for your product pages can be expensive, but the facts don’t lie:

73% more visitors would make a buying decision if the product comes with a video.

So by making video a big part of your store, you’ll be sure to reap the rewards later with more sales, and better conversions.

Video condenses key information

To understand this particular positive, you have to think like a customer. Would you make a buying decision solely based on the description of the product, no matter how descriptive it is? Even if you were a highly tech-savvy person, there would always be a “what if?” in your mind about the product, right?

According to demoup, 46% of potential buyers are dissuaded from buying products online if it comes without an accompanying video that provides hands-on experience with the product.

If an image could be equated to 1000 written or spoken words in its impact, then the impact of video speaks for itself. In fact, Dr. James McQuivey of Forrester Research states, “A minute of video is worth 1.8 million words”.

As a bonus, a video enables you to strike an emotional chord with the customer – something that’s very hard to do with text alone.

Video helps your ranking with Google

Google loves videos; if you didn’t know that, now you do! If you were to put videos on your website, your ranking results would improve, which would lead to higher inward traffic and a better conversion rate.

According to an estimate made by Search Engine Land, videos make up 14% of search engine results. Also, over 90% of the probable consumers watch videos at least once every week, so you could, in turn, lose this large chunk of the potential market to tap into.

Good quality video builds trust

According to Animoto, exactly 58% of customers believe that companies with product videos can be trusted.

When buying products online, customers frequently put their trust in the online store selling the product. After all, you can’t touch the product, look at it from different angles or inspect the quality up-close.

So by including a video of your product, you’re not only letting a potential customer understand the product better, but you’re also showing that you’re confident in your product’s quality and value.

Video keeps people on your product page for longer

According to VeedYou, the average user spends 88% more time on a website with video.

If this is the case, then by simply watching your video, a user is spending longer on your webpage – giving you more time to make that sale. This time is valuable when on average it takes about 50 milliseconds (that’s 0.05 seconds) for users to form an opinion about your website.

By increasing that time with a video, you’ll have a valuable opportunity to utilize the time you wouldn’t otherwise have with a compelling product video.

We’ve outlined why WooCommerce video should be a key component in your online store, it’s time to address how.

Adding video to your product pages isn’t as easy as you’d think, so let’s give you a way to add them to your product gallery.

  1. Click the ‘Add product gallery images’ link

At this point, you’ll need to upload a thumbnail image of the video you want to show, or you can use an existing image in your media gallery. This will act as a preview image in your WooCommerce product gallery but when clicked will show only the embedded video in your product image gallery.

Note: The size of this image depends on your theme settings

  1. Upload your image.
  2. In the URL field of your uploaded image, paste the URL from YouTube which you copied earlier.

  1. Then, set your aspect ratio. Most gallery images are square, so usually, 1:1 works well. A lot of videos these days are 16:9, but it depends entirely on what suits your store.
  2. There’s no save button here because WordPress automatically saved media, so just exit the media library and go back to your product page.
  3. Save or update your product.

Now when you navigate to the page of the product you’ve been editing, you’ll see the video you’ve just uploaded displaying in the WooCommerce product gallery.
